Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

This presentation will give a historical and technical overview of the Journals Cited by Wikipedia (JCW) system used by the English Wikipedia's community to keep track of which journals are the most cited. This system is mainly used by WikiProject Academic Journals to prioritize the creation of articles on academic journals. However, the system has many side benefits and can also be used to evaluate the on-Wikipedia impact of academic journals, and provide yet another citation metric, similar to the Impact Factor, Eigenfactor, or PageRank metrics used in academia. I will cover what motivated me to originally propose the JCW system, as well as its technical implementation, scalability, and extensions to other topics (Books cited by Wikipedia, Publishers cited by Wikipedia, etc...). The talk should be accessible and interesting to all audiences, regardless of technical background, but will be most interesting to people interested in Wikipedian history, academic publishing (including open/libre access supporters) as well as those who would be interested in implementing a similar system in other languages.
