Democracy is best served by media that match political jurisdictions, according to researchers Snyder and Strömberg. Corruption grows in news deserts.
A platform like Wikinews could be grown into the premier news website everywhere in the world. This would require a new interface that could help users identify political jurisdictions and types of news that most interest them from hyper-local to international. It could include links to traditional news sources outside Wikinews while derating and labeling biased sources and contrasting alternative perspectives like allsides.com. Doing so should reduce the risks of conflict escalation like the Rwandan genocide.
The interests of a user could by default be determined in part from geographic coordinates obtained from a cell phone, an IP address, or by direct entry. Users could tailor this further. Browsing history might also be used.
News could be written by a mix of volunteers and paid journalists and editors. Financing could combine crowdfunding with citizen-directed subsidies from businesses and / or governmental entities using an “endowment for journalism,” based on suggestions from McChesney, Cagé, and others. Journalistic priorities could be determined substantially from public input.
The lack of advertising would eliminate the commercial need to flinch when reporting anything that might offend a sponsor.
Might Wikinews grow to rival Facebook without the advertisements and with procedures that require biased and inflammatory language be rewritten from a neutral point of view citing credible sources? Someone who writes a story about their pet might later agree to attend and write about a local public meeting of a governmental body.
