Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

The Wikimedia movement is globally working on educational outreach activities and on implementing education programs. Wikimedia projects offer various possibilities to be used in educational contexts and can serve as a key to open doors for more openness in educational institutions. Wikipedia is the most popular living example. It is used as a teaching tool around the globe. But aside from how to edit in Wikipedia, educational institutions can learn something much more valuable from the Wikimedia projects: sharing information, learning collaboratively, using free licensing and understanding these values of an open culture in order to reinforce the idea of contributing to free knowledge as a common task. The Wikimedia movement and its projects are based on these values and principles. But how can they be transferred into educational contexts? What do institutions need to know (from us) to make sharing, collaborating, participation, free licensing, using open source software etc. a common practice in education? How can we make advantages and benefits of practicing education in an open and collaborative way more visible? We have thoughts and we’ve collected ideas, but there is much we don’t know. Help us filling the gaps and finding answers. Share your experience, your ideas and thoughts with us on how to open up educational institutions and make them share their knowledge with the Wikimedia projects.
