Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

The Wikimedia technical community approved our Code of Conduct this March, part of a broader effort to make the Wikimedia movement more respectful, diverse, and welcoming.

This roundtable is an opportunity to learn about and discuss the new Code of Conduct. Topics may include the contents of the policy and how it differs from other communities’ policies. We also hope to spark some discussion and consideration on how other communities (inside and outside of Wikimedia) can choose to adopt codes of conduct or similar policies.

The Code of Conduct is a policy which creates clear expectations, so people can better interact with each other in a respectful and productive way.

In other organizations, the Code of Conduct drafting process is often limited to a small group of people, and the Code is frequently approved by a Benevolent Dictator for Life or small governing board. In contrast, our Code of Conduct was written, debated, and approved with deep community participation throughout.

It also solves difficult problems that similar open source organizations did not or could not address.

The Code of Conduct includes a statement of principles, behavioral expectations, and an enforcement mechanism.

The goal is to use it as a tool for cultural change, to help us become a stronger and more diverse community. We expect it will be used as an informal but effective community reference point, in addition to the formal enforcement process.
