Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

In the last two years I have participated in over 40 editathons and other Wikimedia events. My photographs have been used in several dozen Wikipedia biography articles, as well as the 2016 Executive Director Report to the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, the 2014-2015 Wikimedia DC Annual Report, the Signpost, the Folgier Shakespeare Library blog, and the National Geographic blog. In this presentation I will describe

  • Taking photos that show your organization, your partner organization, and your event in the best light
  • Taking photos of living authors at large events like the National Book Festival and book signings
  • Safe space and anonymity considerations
  • Collaborating with other photographers during and after an event (Twitter, Commons)
  • Technical challenges at events (light!) and how to solve some of them
What will attendees take away from this session?
  • Simple things that photographers and event organizers can do with the equipment they are already using to take the best photos, and make them accessible to the people who might be looking for them.
