Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

In 2015 Wikimedia Germany released the beta version of the Attribution Generator - a tool to automatically detect all necessary license information for reusing Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia pictures. With only a few clicks, it helps legal laypeople to follow the obligations of Creative Commons licenses by generating the appropriate license attribution for the pictures they want to reuse for their own purposes. After the tool had been translated into English in 2016 and is now available for English speaking users, we would like to further develop it in the coming years. In this session, we want to show you what the Attribution Generator does and how it works. We would also like to explore with you which features and functions you, the Wikimedia community and reusers of freely licensed pictures, would like for it to have in order to integrate it into your daily work in the Wikimedia projects and when spreading free knowledge. If you had three wishes, how would the Attribution Generator work in 2020? Do you dream of a Firefox add-on? Would you like to accumulate license notices? Or do we need structured data from Wikidata in Wikimedia Commons in order to correctly attribute pictures? After the lightning talk I will stay for your suggestions and ideas.

What will attendees take away from this session?

Attendees will learn what the Attribution Generator is, how they can use it to generate reliable license notices for reusing pictures from Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia, and how the tool operates. Attendees can also learn how to translate the tool into their own language or how they can contribute to making the Attribution Generator known in their community.
