Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

In March 2017, we launched the Movement Strategy Process #Wikimedia2030 and invited many different audiences to participate in conversations around the future of the Wikimedia movement and our role in the world. The leading question in this process was “What do we want to build or achieve together over the next 15 years?” When we all meet at Wikimania, the draft of Wikimedia’s Strategic Direction for our future will have been published and will be under review. This session will focus on exploring the affiliates’ and other groups’ perspective on the draft.

In my role as the Movement Strategy Track Lead for Organized Groups, I will very briefly present the essential learnings from the previous months and will then invite the audience to a round-table discussion. Together, we will discuss and refine the draft and explore what perspectives Wikimedia affiliates and other organized groups bring into the conversation. We will also talk about what organized groups consider important to address and clarify in phase 2 of the movement strategy process. In this phase (that will begin in October), the movement will start discussing the implications for what the direction means for the movement in terms of roles, responsibilities and resources.

Please note: We will host a “Movement Strategy Space” from Thursday through Sunday in Salon 6 at the Sheraton. In this space – that also offers some little somethings for people who have been active in the strategy process and some space to re-energize – we will organize discussion rounds, open space, educational as well as working sessions around movement strategy, strategic direction and new voices insights. Stay tuned for more information!
