Representation of diverse voices within our movement has been a point of contention for a while now, and it is important to be aware of who is missing from important conversations. In my research, I asked 2,132 Wikipedians (of the two most commonly edited Wikipedia language versions, English and German) about their contributions to the project. The results will help us to understand whose voices are being heard and whose are not.
In the first part of the session I will introduce five types of Wikipedia editors, and their distinct contributions to the project.
In the second part, I will show that all but one of these types might be missing our conversations, for instance, but not only, here at Wikimania.
In the third part, we will together collect what might be consequences for our discourse that arise from this over-/underrepresentation.
The results of this session will help the Wikimedia movement to be more inclusive. The model can also serve as a tool to analyze other Wikipedia language versions and, as such, could be adapted and expanded to be more inclusive itself. Let’s talk about it!
- What will attendees take away from this session?
- The five types of editors model is introduced as a tool to think about the Wikipedia project and its contributors. It immediately adds to the participants’ expert knowledge of the Wikipedia projects. Its practical application in the session might immediately translate into a heightened awareness for the rest of the conference of the types of Wikipedia editors that are underrepresented at Wikimania.
