Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

In March 2017, I became the first Wikipedia Visiting Scholar at Northeastern University (NEU) working on the Women Writers Project (WWP). The WWP began in 1988 at Brown University, with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and in 2013 moved into Northeastern University's Digital Scholarship Group. As Visiting Scholar, I receive remote access to Northeastern University Libraries resources as well as the resources and staff expertise of the WWP. In this position, I'm creating and improving Wikipedia articles on women and writing before 1900. This also includes early women’s writing, women and the book trade, women and education, women as readers, and so forth. This presentation addresses issues related to systemic bias of women writers in the pre-20th century era, and the impact of this bias on Wikipedia. It addresses sources which are inaccessible without institutional access or paying high fees, as well as those only available in print, or found in odd pockets of the internet. The presentation will also highlight WikiProject Women Writers, a project I founded in 2014 on the English Wikipedia.

What will attendees take away from this session?

Attendees will gain insight pre-1900 English language women's writing, the challenges facing editors with adding notable women writers and their works to Wikipedia, and the WikiProject on English Wikipedia which has been addressing this issue.
