Great idea, I've been pondering something similar with metalwork. Have you considered how much detail our existing photographs give? Presumably good enough photographs would enable an AI to use spectroscopy and stylistic details to classify pots by the clay used and the artist - it would be great to get information on trade routes etc if we could process this by computer from millions of pieces of pottery.
