Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

Pattypan is a tool for batch uploading media files to Wikimedia Commons. The tool was developed to fill the need for easy-to-use tools for batch uploading. Pattypan is developed and maintained by User:Yarl and has already been used to upload over 40.000 images.

The workflow is simple: media files are stored offline in a single folder, metadata for each file are prepared in a spreadsheet and Pattypan combines the two and uploads them to Wikimedia Commons. The biggest advantage of this workflow are (1) GLAMs without online media repository can still batch upload media to Wikimedia Commons, and (2) users can do metadata conversions in well-known spreadsheet programs like Excel or Calc.

Wikimedia Nederland has offered successful Pattypan workshops to Dutch Wikimedians and GLAM staff as part of its skill-building program. Some GLAMs are already using Pattypan to do small batch-uploads. These experiences have given us a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of Pattypan, and how it can be integrated in a GLAM-workflow.

In this workshop, I want to provide an overview of the Pattypan workflow. Focus will be on the preparation of metadata and the integration with Wikidata to make sure that metadata are future-proof and can be easily converted once structured data are introduced on Commons. By sharing our experiences, I want to provide other Wikimedians and GLAM-Wiki professionals with the means and knowledge to contribute to Wikimedia Commons in a very powerful way and open up their digital heritage collections.

Attendees are invited to bring a few media files and follow each step as it is explained so that they can do their first Pattypan upload at Wikimania!

What will attendees take away from this session?
  • Attendees will be able to do a (small) batch upload with Pattypan, if necessary following the slide presentation that will be made available on Wikimedia Commons and which serves as a small step-by-step guide.
  • Attendees will have an understanding of how metadata as provided by GLAMs need to be transformed in order to be as useful as possible on Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.

For workshops and discussions, what level is the intended audience?

Intermediate. Some knowledge of Wikimedia Commons and metadata is necessary to understand how Pattypan can be used to its fullest potential. Attendees are invited to bring a few media files (1-5, preferable created by themselves) to follow along with the steps explained in this workshop.

Length of session (if other than 25 minutes, specify how long)
55 minutes.
Will you attend Wikimania if your submission is not accepted?
Not sure.
