Wikipedia exists in over 290 language editions. These editions vary widely in content matter and quality. Translating articles from one edition to another can be a good way to build upon the work done by others and to benefit from knowledge that might not be readily available in your own community.
As part of its education program, Wikimedia Nederland has set up a successful cooperation with ITV Hogeschool voor Tolken en Vertalen (in Dutch only), a school for professional translators and interpreters. Students can do a Wikimedia internship during which they translate articles from a foreign language into Dutch. Articles are selected by members of the Dutch Wikipedia community, but can also be suggested by the students themselves if they have a particular interest in that topic. Students provide the raw text; wikification is done by the Wikipedian who requested the article. In this way, each participant in the project does what he or she knows best.
In this presentation, I will provide a general overview of the project, starting with general organization and results. I will also discuss some of the pitfalls of a project like this, including different community standards on citations, and plagiarism. I will pay particular attention to the amount of work involved in running a project like this, including writing the application, setting up the project page on Wikipedia, introducing the students to Wikimedia, day-to-day support, and daily maintenance.

Attendees will have a clear understanding of why they should, or shouldn't set up a translation program like this. I will pay particular attention to the amount of work that is needed to start a program like this so that interested Wikimedians can immediately integrate a similar program into their annual planning, if they want to.
