We invite you to read the Wikimania Movement Strategy Space report.

It captures the comments, feedback and concrete suggestions that were made during the sessions.

What do we want
to build or achieve together
over the next 15 years?

For 16 years, Wikimedians have worked together to build the largest free knowledge resource in human history. During this time, we've grown from a small group of editors to a diverse community of editors, developers, affiliates, readers, donors, and partners.

A world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.

All of us now have an opportunity to decide where we go from here. We can decide how we make our vision a reality. What will we have achieved 15 years from now? What role do we want to play in the world in 2030? Who will have joined our movement? What work lies ahead of us? These are questions we can answer together.

As a movement, we are in the middle of a broad discussion to define Wikimedia's future role in the world and develop a collaborative strategy to fulfill that role. A draft of the strategic direction is now open for review and you are warmly invited to join the conversation. Visit the strategy portal on Meta to review where we started.

Building Wikimedia's future together

In March 2017, we launched the Movement Strategy Process #Wikimedia2030 and invited many different audiences to participate in conversations around the future of the Wikimedia movement and our role in the world. The leading question in this process was “What do we want to build or achieve together over the next 15 years?” Wikimania will offer a great opportunity for us to review and refine the Strategic Direction with the participants and explore next steps as well as to socialize content from New Voices research and findings from movement-wide conversations about Wikimedia’s future.

Sessions in the official Wikimania program

Wikimedia Movement Strategy Space

From Thursday through Sunday, the Strategy team will host a Movement Strategy Space (Salon 6, Level 3) where we invite all Wikimania participants to join us for several working sessions, discussion rounds, informal conversations and fun. The space will be open all day and everyone's also welcome to occasionally drop-in and explore how the process has engaged and inspired the movement and how we can build Wikimedia's future together. Everyone who has actively participated in the process and the sessions is also invited to enjoy the chance to relax and re-energize for the upcoming steps of the process.

Our goals for this space are

  • to educate participants about the findings from the New Voices research and insights from the conversations among organized groups and individual contributors
  • to explore the movement strategy process, the strategic direction and its implications for our movement as well as the the endorsement process
  • to have participants express their feedback, ideas and concerns around the draft of the strategic direction and their understanding of the most important issues to discuss in phase 2

Sessions in the space will include

  • Socialize New Voices content: What can we learn from insights from the New Voices tracks?
  • Review and discuss the Strategic Direction: What do people like about it, what can be improved, what is not in there could be included?
  • What perspectives can partners from the free knowledge sphere (e.g. Creative Commons) contribute?
  • What does “endorsement” actually mean? How can affiliates handle the endorsement process?
  • plus more coming up
